Face Lifting with Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is a very beneficial ingredient for the skin.

What is it?

Hyaluronic Acid is an excellent substance to improve wrinkles and folds on the face skin, as well as to lift areas such as lips, cheeks and chin that can become thinner with age. They can be both permanent and temporary. They are used in both women and men. We especially pay special attention to men, so that the racial characteristics and the male profile do not change.

Temporary injections

Hyaluronic Acid is produced in several different types and is the best-known material from temporary implants. Hyaluronic Acid is a natural component (polysaccharide) of the skin. For the purpose of rejuvenation and filing of wrinkles on the face and other areas, it is produced synthetically in the laboratory. It is not produced by animals and does not contain animal excipients, unlike collagen. The most well-known products that circulate in Greece and have both CE (approval for marketing in the EU as a commercial product) and FDA (approval for marketing in the USA as a pharmaceutical/medical product) are Restylane, Juvederm and Belotero. They are very safe and are slowly absorbed by the skin. Their action starts with the absorption of water locally and lasts from 9-12 months or even 18-24 months (depending on their density) and they are used for different purposes. The thin implant is suitable for the treatment of fine lines. In contrast, thicker materials are very good for deeper injections to add volume where missing.

The Procedure in Brief

Hyaluronic Acid is placed under the skin or inside the skin, with injections performed in the doctor’s office. The process usually takes 15-30 minutes. Only local anesthetics are used occasionally. Some materials already contain long anesthetic to make the whole process more comfortable.

Permanent Implants

Permanent implants are not widely used, exactly because they are permanent. This means that they cannot be removed after use and if they are not suitable for the patient, their action cannot be reversed. We are actually talking about injectable silicone in oily form, which is not licensed for aesthetic purposes. This form of silicone creates reactive nodules and in the case of the face , there is no way to remove it because the nerves in the facial area are at risk.

Duration of the surgery

The process takes approximately 15-30 minutes.

Recovery

The treated area will be slightly red and swollen for a few hours after the surgery. If the lips have been under treatment, they may be a slightly swollen for a longer period of time. There will be occasional bruises which will quickly disappear.

Face

On the face, we can strengthen the lips, smooth deep wrinkles (usually the nasolabial folds or the vertical wrinkles in the middle eyebrow), acne areas and improve areas that have become thinner/atrophic. As we said before, especially for men, we pay special attention to the characteristics of each person individually in order to avoid the change of the male profile. Temporary materials usually need to be repeated in 1-2 years depending on the density and the application area.

Time off work

To apply hyaluronic acid, you do not need to make any changes on your daily routine. You can cover possible bruises and swelling with make-up.

Time off exercise

It is better to avoid intense exercise on the day of treatment.

Driving

Patients should avoid driving until they feel completely comfortable if local anesthesia has been used.

Final result

In treatments using Hyaluronic Acid, you will be able to see some results immediately; however the final result will take 3-4 weeks because, as we said before, the result is achieved by absorbing water, which needs time. In addition, our experience shows that it needs time for the final integration of the material in the surrounding tissues.

Possible Complications with Injectable Implants

This is a routine process which is extremely successful for the majority of patients. However, just like any other procedure, it is very important for you to understand what can go wrong. A list of possible complications is found below.

Skin abnormalities: If the implant material is superficial, it can cause bumps on the skin that may take time to disappear. However, this is very rare when used by a trained professional with the right technique.

Minor asymmetry: The same injection is made on both sides of the face. There is a small chance of a different effect on one side than on the other. The existing difference in the underlying anatomy which exists for each of us also plays a significant role in this. This will be discussed in more detail during application, in order to understand why we may need to put a different amount of material on both sides of the face.

Bruises: They are of minor importance and are quickly restored.

Allergic reactions: Extremely rare due to the excellent quality of the materials I use.

Loss of material: This cannot happen but incomplete correction may be considered a loss. The process just needs to be repeated both because the correction achieved is different from person to person and also because we do not know from the beginning how much quantity will be needed in each case.
